Default Bye bye PCV. Hello SESTP

My bike (2009 XL883) has been throwing out code P1009 and would die right after start up. Dealer said they could not find any problems with the bike and said it may be the PCV causing the issues. They weren't claiming that having a PCV is an issue, just that mine might have an issue. Whatever.

So i did the only thing I could at the time: bought a SESTP. (SERT sounds so much better.)

Now I'm going back and forth with the extended warranty company to cover the cost. I refuse to take no for an answer. The warranty plan expires next month and I've never had a claim. They can afford to absorb at least a portion of the cost. I bought the bike used from HD in Los Angeles and it had all of the aftermarket items on it already.

Hats off to Timpanogos HD here in Lindon, Utah. The service manager Kyle cut me a deal on the SESTP and didn't charge any labor. Also, the Dyno guy had done a bike with the same set up as mine so they loaded that MAP so that I wouldn't have to pay for that too.

The result, bike runs hard and smooth and the check engine light is gone. They must have been right on that best guess situation. Now let's see if the warranty was a good buy, or if I just donated a few thousand dollars to the retirement fund of their pool of employees.

I'm confused. Why did you not contact your extended warranty company about the suspect PCV (it was included at time of sale, right?) instead of buying something new and trying to get it added to the warranty? Isn't that original part already covered? They might have authorized the purchase of the SERT and you would have paid nothing.

BTW, I got my Sportster from LA Harley almost 24 years ago!

Good luck,

John

Both I and the dealership contacted the warranty company before anything was final. Yes. The PCV was on the bike when I bought it; however, the warranty company said they only cover HD brand parts. So, any part that anybody adds that is not a stock part the extended warranty plan will not cover it.

The warranty company said no at first. I have now filed for an exception due to the fact that the PCV was on the bike and that the dealerr who sold me the bike represented the warranty in that mannor.

For the record, Sreamin' Eagle Super Tuner Pro is not even covered because it is not a street use part.

The bottom line is that the very, very, fine print states that anything not added at the factory, or by the dealership that is not HD brand street part, then you are hosed if it goes bad.

As I was typing this I got the final call. NO WAY BUDDY! I just bought myself a SESRTP! BUYER BEWARE OF THE EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN!!!!!! I know they offer towing and hotel coverage, but so does my progressive isurance plan.

One more thing about paying for this sort of thing: The wife complains but the bike never does.

Now, that's looking at the bright side of things!

Bummer they didn't cover, but it seems these extended warranties are often just a waste of money.

Your baby is running strong and hopefully long.

That was nice that the dealer installed your SEPST for you and put a dynoed map on it as well. Did they actually have your bike on the dyno?

If you want to use the SEPST yourself in the future you will need the cables and software.

They didn't dyno my bike; however, this was a map from the same make, intake, and exhaust set up. So basically it's like downloading a map with a power vision and loading it into my bike. This map has adjustments for timing, fuel, and all. I know the rev limiter is now at 7k.
