IMO generally tires are a compromise between long life and traction. The Dunlop d401 when used on back of a Sporty has good traction and good life.
I'm not impressed with the Dunlop 501 on back of my Dyna, it slips around corners and is wearing fast.
On the multiple pre 2009 touring bikes I have had the stock Dunlops never scare me in a corner and last pretty good.
I don't have much experience with others although the Avon Venom's I had on a few customs seemed to stick well

My Commander II's are awesome no matter the weather. There was a noticeable difference in performance from the worn out stock Dunlops to the new Commander IIs.

If you're going to change tires, I suggest changing both front and rear, especially if you're changing models.
