if it's making you nervous or making the bike unstable, mod. always use straps to secure the bike.

saw this pic last night of a guy who had his whole bike balanced on a single scissor jack. had the rear wheel off too. THEN asked if it was secure like that :O
I was more amazed he got it high enough balanced on a single jack, and was able to take the wheel off without dropping it.

cant see underneath, I suspect he has a 2x6 (or 8) straddling
the frame that the sissors pad is on.
IMHO, it still doesnt seem very stable or safe...

Thanks. Without the straps, bike will rock a bit. No way I would lift it without strapping it. It's solid as is. Won't move. My question was more about the capacity of that crossmember to bear the weight of 50% of the bike. Me worrying over nothing.

I only used a bottle jack when I replaced my tires. I just kept the jiffy stand on the dining room floor to balance it. It was actually pretty sturdy and was not a problem at all. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done until you get the right tools to do it the way it should be done.
