Hey, this is Chuck in Georgia. I just joined the forum and have a question. I found this thread as I was searching on 'overfill.' Yep, I'm a fool and overfilled oil on my 2010 Sportster 48. Was about to take it in for some maintenance and oil change and thought I'd do the right thing and top off as I hadn't checked oil in a few rides. Turned out to be the way wrong thing. Had it idling to warm up, putting on my helmet, and the dipstick blew out and a geyser went over the side of the bike. Turned it off. Read up on some threads, got a turkey baster, took out the 1/2 quart I put in. It must have been topped right up. Anyway, I've taken it out for a couple short rides and there's still oil dripping a couple places when I let it idle, and a little even seeping from the dipstick cap. It all stops when I turn it off. What's worst case I'm looking at here? Dipstick says it's full hot now. Should I keep pulling more oil out and do short rides, or could something be blown? Feeling real bad.

Chuck,
Hopefully the 'leaks' are just residual oil from when the cap blew off and the "geyser went over the side of the bike". Regardless, this shows that the oil level should checked when engine/oil is hot to get a better reading. And I never 'top' mine off but run it about a quarter down.

run it for a few then check. 1/2 way on the dipstick is fine. You can go above if you want. Usually come out the air cleaner as blowby though.

maybe the oring on the dipstick needs to go.

Those dowels are better quality than what came with the new jugs i got. They looked like they were just rolled up sheet metal

Thanks for feedback. Def learned a hard lesson on this one. Will keep drawing out a little more at a time and starting up to see if anything still dripping. Good idea on the o-ring, I did a visual and it looks okay but couldn't hurt to replace it.

This morning I rode to the bike shop to get lowering brackets put on the back end and check out what sounded like a stone stuck somewhere. Pretty basic stuff but they're cool guys, the young guy that owns the shop sold everything he had to get into it and they do a good job. They got the stone out, showed me why the lowering brackets I'd bought weren't correct for my model of bike, and took advantage of me being freezing cold to sell me a $250 pair of gloves haha. Not a complete loss though, while I waited I went over the road to the pub which even though it was 8.30am had a bunch of people in it drinking because New Zealand had just beaten Oracle Team USA in the America's Cup yacht racing. They were all bike guys but none of them were on their bikes because it was cold, they thought I was a crazy lady Not that cold by the way, like 42 fahrenheit, nothing like what you guys get in the winter. So good fun and not a total loss although the answer to 'What did I do to my Sportster today' ended up being 'Nothing'!
