I bought a used hydraulic motorcycle jack to replace the one that was stolen from my garage, the seller was local to me. I paid £50 ($63) for it which I think is a great price. The jack has a lifting capacity of 1500 lbs (680 Kgs), it has pedals for raising and lowering, it has four wheels and a handle to move the raised motorcycle around the garage floor.

What some have found is when pressing the pedal to let the bike down if you press a bit too firmly the bike drops alarmingly quickly. By drilling and tapping the base for a bolt and a couple of lock nuts you can set the peddle to press the right amount to set the speed of descent.

I have a similar one and it doesn't hold the pressure so if wanting to use it long term I need to raise the lift so the locking wedge locates on one of the three points on the outside flat plate.

Started installing the rocker lockers on the roady. Did the bitchy rear box first, then onto the front box.

While torquing the inner bolts on the front box, I felt one get loose at around 14NM. Thought for sure it broke in the head. Amazingly and possibly because of the few hours after Easter that I’m sin free, it came out.

The little Harbor Freight Quinn torque wrench is sweet and worth every penny.

Bad news is no dealer has them in stock. Is it okay to replace them with hardware store bolts? The washer flange is clean and tight on the factory bolts.

It would be if you know the grade of steel. They look something of a speciality part with attached washer and what looks like a lower height hex head.

Most likely Grade 5. I don't see any reason you cannot use a similar bolt from your hardware store, as long as Grade 5.

Looks like you broke one of the threads on that bolt. Colony makes a replacement kit and I think they are grade 8 bolts. I wouldn't use bolts of unknown quality here personally and I would not use stainless. Remember these go into the heads so break one or bugger the threads and you have a problem.

I'm going to look at a customised 1984 XLX1000 on Thursday, it has a little over 19k miles on the speedometer and it comes with documentation to back up the mileage. The seller is asking for £4995, is it worth the asking price, or should I haggle to get it lower?

Here are a few images of the Ironhead.

The new HD parts finder has part numbers AND specs on most fasteners, you no longer need to go the HD SIP for them...but that bolt is an exception, check out https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/index
free registration is required but well worth it. If you are going to try to save that thread I'd use a thread chaser, NOT a tap, being that the head is aluminum. ARP makes a nice one, pricey but worth it, mine saved me a LOT of grief.
