Switched my seat for an old OEM “Sport” seat. Seems pretty comfortable and looks a little out of the ordinary.

A few weeks ago I picked up a used set of Further Forward Mids for my 48. Hoping this would be more comfortable, I easily swapped them over. The flat mini boards that come with the kit don't work with the shifter (common complaint) so I re-used the stock pegs. Seems okay and allows for better handling but knees are too high.

So then I thought I'd try a higher seat like a spring seat. Found a cheap company that makes chyneez knock-offs and figured for 100 bucks I'd give it a try. Well, it sucks. It's comfortable just sitting on it but I'm too high now and it makes my rear absolutely numb. Way more numb after just 30 mins than the Mustang or stock seat did. And the springs must be for Rosie ODonnell because they do not compress AT ALL. So it's coming off. Just figured I'd show you what it looks like. If you want it, hit me up. I'm still on the fence whether to keep the mids as well.

Those footpegs look like forwards from 2010 onwards. I have no clue why HD did that but it looks like it moves you foot a long way from the brake peddle. You might be better with the round pegs from a 883 Iron or the clevis that trackerdie make - TrackerDie Mini Mod Clevis for 04-22 Sportster Models

These are my stock pegs from my 48. Straight pegs don't help either as the left side shifter arm isn't designed correctly so even straight pegs don't allow the foot to fit between them. It's a common issue with the FFM kit. Besides, straight pegs sit even higher than these and my knees are already uncomfortable. Hence the fiasco with the seat.

This is my bike with the further forward mid foot peg. What is wrong with the gear change for you?

I took the Iron 883 out for it's Ministry of Transport (M.O.T.) test yesterday, unfortunately the cheap Chinese dipstick with a built in temperature gauge kept popping up evert time my right thigh touched it. When I got home there was oil down the oil tank cover, on the rear exhaust pipe, the belt guards, the belt and rear tyre. The primary drive drain plug was also weeping a little oil.

Today I cleaned all the oil off the rear end, I topped up the oil with fresh Putoline V-twin formula 20W-50 to replace the oil that had been lost. I junked that cheapo dipstick and replaced it with the stock H-D item. I also replaced the leaking rubber 'O' ring on the primary drain plug with a new one. Now the Iron is oil tight just as it should be.

Same reason others complain: either the peg sits too low that the boot doesn't fit under it or too high that you have to lift the whole leg to shift. Either way it's annoying and dangerous. I'm fine using my stock pegs. Just not sold on the feel yet. Might put the stock forwards back on. The perfect placement for me would be between forwards and further mids but of course that doesn't exist.

Maybe it is because of being relatively new to HDs but I haven't seen any posts of people not able to change gear with the setup. You can see how the gear change sits on my bike, I do have to move my toe down a little to get under it but I recall always having to do that on any bike.

A good metal guy could put a higher bend in the lever I bet using some heat.

How about a heal shift?

I believe there is some adjustable forward controls but can't remember if it is to move the pegs further forward or back some.

It's not that big of a deal to me. Don't really want boards on the 48 anyway. I like the feel of pegs as I keep my arch on the peg and brake or shift by rocking my foot, not lifting it. The bad reviews were on HDs website. I thought too the reviews were just picky people being picky but after riding awhile I realized the problem. The stock angled pegs fixed the problem for me for now. Until I decide to put the forwards back on.

We can go back to the original topic now.
