Default Will 1200 jugs and pistons be a direct swap to a 883 ?

Will 2003 1200 jugs and pistons be a direct swap to the lower half of a 2002 883 ?
I can get a near perfect matching set jugs and pistons.

Will the 1200 pistons fit on the 883 rods. other word's a cheaper swap, using All Harley parts.

I can have all the parts needed to make the swap for $200.

Since the heads of the 883 and 1200 are different, it's not technically a direct swap. I believe you'd need reverse dome pistons. I could be wrong.

I would think it would either have to do with the compression ratio or valve clearance. If I'm wrong someone will correct me. lol

You are quite right. Stock 1200 pistons will not match up to 883 heads, as the combustion chambers are significantly smaller and will raise CR too high. The jugs could be used however with suitable new pistons to give a boost over stock CR and improved performance, which is what the 1250 kits do. What's a few ccs between friends!

I think Hammer or NRHS carry pistons for that conversion, or they probably know what is best to use if going that route. One, or both, offer a 1212 kit, which I believe is a bore job on your existing cylinders, assuming they are the earlier thick wall type. I think the later 883 jugs have thinner bore liners.

In short = no. There are additional factors to consider and you're better off looking into the various upgrade kits vs. "McGrubering" your 883 motor.

The stock 1200 is actually 1203cc, 1212 cc is about +.010. Boring stock 1200 cylinders to +.010 with suitable pistons will be fine and make for a cheap conversion for the OP.

What about the fuel controler? I believe you need one when putting bigger jugs on.

2002 is a carbureted bike I think, not fuel injected. Only a minor rejetting and a small timing retard I think.

Unless you want to install an ignition upgrade.

Since the compression would be a little high, using 883 heads.

Is there enough material, dome thickness to machine a relief in the 1200 piston top?

Should be ok as there is valve pocket, will machine no farther then its depth.

Maching is not a problem, as I am a machinist
