Default rear shocks and years that fit

Hey guys, wondering if someone has an answer... I need to replace my rear shocks on a bike i just got (rust on the springs) my bike is an 06, and i can get a wicked deal on a set of an 02. Both are 13 1/4, and both off an xl1200. My only problem is that Harley lists 88-03, then changes the part number from 04-present. anyone know what the difference is, or will they fit?

nope- all I know is that you don't want sporty shocks on your bike! surprise, surprise... the stockers are horrible. and especially if you ever want anyone on the back- hot chicks like some level of comfort !

works performance (custom built for my weight plus my +2) on mine... you don't want to go with works if you are trying to saving $.
there are plenty of other options (air shocks from the big twins is one choice)- someone with that experience will chime in soon I predict...

I may be wrong but I think the only bikes that came with 13 1/4 inch shocks were the Roadster models. Are you measuring eye to eye or total length? I believe the stock shocks were 11 3/4 eye to eye.

That being said, I wouldn't pay a dime for stock Sportster shocks unless they are the Roadster shocks. The extra length of the Roadster shocks makes them ride halfway decent.

Yeah they will ride like crap. The low has 11 3/4 inch shocks, the Roadster has 13 1/4 length shocks. The shorter shocks are stiffer, and they bottom out easier.

I wouldn't swap the 11 inchers for the 13 inchers. It will work but again the ride will suffer and you will be lowering a Roadster which I also wouldn't do. If the only problem is that the springs are rusty, take the springs off and clean them up and stick with the 13 inch Roadster shocks.

The newer rubbermount models like yours are heavier than the older Sportsters, and have stiffer springs on the shocks. Ones from an '02 should fit fine, but may be too soft, especially if riding 2-up.

I'm trying to figure out shocks, too. The factory shocks on my '06 measure right at 13.25" or so eye to eye. The springs have begun to rust and they ride harsh as the dickens. From what I've read a lot of folks use the 13" Road King shocks on these bikes. I believe you need some extra washers on the right to clear the belt guard.
