Default late model handlebar controls on older bike

Hi....new here.....I recently got an 88 883hugger with 1200 kit...
the handlebar switches are pretty well shot..can I replace the whole housing/switch kit with a later models (1996 or newer)??? I have searched ebay and found numerous 96 and later controls but not many for a 1988...they look close to the same with same switches just shaped a little different.
thanks for any help/advice

The '95 and older bikes use a threaded cable connection for the throttle and idle, while the '96+ bikes use a push in type. You'd have to swap those at least. I can't comment on the shape of the switches/housing without further research.

thanks for reply! the bike presently has 20" ape hangers ( i got the bike that way in a trade for my dirtbike ) I just ordered 28" drag bars and got all the shorter cables ( used/ebay!!! ) the handlebars presently have the original switches/brake/clutch controls and are in pretty ugly shape. i am hoping to update and upgrade on a very low budget. stores/catalogs are too much $$ for my pockets....i am hoping to find later model switches ( there are alot 96 and up affordable on ebay ) and modify the wiring to match the needs of the bike...it looks like they are the same switches just upgraded housings.
thanks again...
