1961 XLCH. Do I have to remove the engine to get the rocker boxes off or on?
Hello,
I'm restoring a 1961 XLCH Ironhead. I would like to put the engine on but I don't have my rocker boxes yet. I realized rececntly that the bike came with the newer type boxes so I'm on the hunt for the original type.
If I put the engine back on to continue with my build can I get the rocker boxes on while the engine/heads are within the frame?
Thanks,
redbug2

I don't think you would have any problem, should be enough clearance on an older bike like that. Lots more maintenance back then.
Let's see some pics.
Also, go over to xlforum.net, a lot of Ironhead owners over there compared to here.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the other site.
Here are some thumbnails. It's my brother-in-laws bike. He want's it mostly stock. He's changed the paint and I'm making copper push rod tubes and a copper carb intake.
Stainless spokes, powder coated parts, chrome, zinc plate, new cylinders, valve job, frame repair, and the list goes on, and on, and on......
I'm looking for a correct pair of rocker covers, just missed a pair on ebay... I'll get them cheap at Oley PA swap meet in march if I don't find them sooner.

It sure would make your life easier to remove the engine and get it up on a bench. Those were the simpler days, and there's not a whole lot involved in removing the engine. It would also give you time to thoroughly check out the frame's engine cradle, down tubes, nuts and bolts, etc. Looks like a great project! If it were me, I'd remove it...
