Default Custom exhaust / Tips and info

Hi guys,

I’m thinking about making a custom exhaust for the Iron 883. My inspiration:

A good friend of me is a very skilled welder, he will be fabricating the exhaust.
But.. We don’t know anything about exhaust..

Welding the exhaust will be no problem, but how to get a nice sound ?
I’m currently riding V&h Short shots, I hope the exhaust will be not that loud.

I think the RSD Slant 2-into-1 sounds very good.

Are there baffles you guys recommend ? or just keep it open ? maybe buy a muffler ?
If buying the muffler is the way to go.. any recommendations ?

THX !!!!!

Here's mine, this one used shortshots up to the black end cans, then some stainless welded on to the end using the shortshot bracket, the baffle was slightly cut down louvered baffle bolted through the end can. They are double wrapped as the shortshots looked too narrow. The others on my Vrod are almost totally hand fabricated except for the flange which was cut from some old pipes and welded on,the stainless tubing can be sourced from ebay in almost any bend configuration then welded together, set of pipes shouldn't cost more then $100 or so.

Makes me doubt the project..

Can anyone tell me why some exhaust have springs hanging on the collector 2to1?

Thx ! a lot of info already.

Would a megaphone muffler without baffles sound good ?

Is there a recommended tube size ?

The connections to the cylinders, whats the name of the part ? where could I buy it ?

Biltwell sells kits with the exhaust flange. Don't over think it. I fab up things for my bike and if I don't like the first set I make another. Usually I have so little money in it that it's no big deal. I think the key to a good performing/sounding exhaust is to have a couple bends for back pressure.
