thanks. am afraid the stator is on its way out. i can easilly get it load tested. i have never had a problem with it not charging when i ride it (yet).
There are a couple of Stickys in the DIY Electrical section which give instructions on checking your charging circuit. They should help you identify if you have any charging problems. From what you say you have more serious things to sort out! If the wiring has been butchered a lot, what you describe could be due to poor grounds, bad connections, or even wrong connections. It all depends how confident you feel about checking and sorting it out, although as you are asking us, I guess not!
I suggest you pick on one thing, such as the lights, and carefully check them through, clean every ground and connector, check where each wire actually goes, verify it is electrically sound. A bad or missing ground can have a major affect on how everything else works.
