So I love my bike, everything about it....Except the rear tire, I would love to put a fat rear tire on the bike with out clearance issues. Any one know the biggest I can put on this thing? Also If I wanted to put a 180 on it what kits are available? Thanks for your help everyone.

Without doing some major rear end work you won't be able to use a wider, bigger tire. Usually the recommendations are to either go 1 or 2 size up before you start getting into complications.

 

You can run a Shinko 777 170/70-16 with out mods. Here is my Nightster with the 777.

 

I have been looking into this for when the time comes to change tires... Tire brand plays a role since even if you have two that list the same dimension, they might be different...

i basically did what is mentioned in that link in wachuko's post, i wrote it up somewhere in one of the MANY threads discussing this or maybe it was on XLF, i can't remember. Despite what some argue, you should NOT put a wider tire on your stock rim. There is a lot of physics involved, which i'd be glad to break out, but for sake of boring and repeating myself over and over, do NOT do that. It mainly has to do with the tire contact patch, pinching, and sidewall support. A 3" rim is maxed out with a tire at 150mm, now tire manufacturers vary some with the molds so sometimes, as seen on here, some have fitted a 160mm tire because it may be actually 155mm or so. A 4.5 rim is really pushing it for a 180mm, which is what I run, straight off a Street Bob with custom axle spacers. If you space your pulleys out correctly you won't even have to convert to chain. I did because I like it and had plans originally to use a Crossbones rear wheel (17x6 with a 200mm).

 

As Kontankerous points out you already have the widest tyre that will fit your current wheel. To go wider requires a change of wheel, to get a wider rim. If you have a wire spoke wheel at present you could have a wider rim built on to your current hub, or alternatively find a suitable wider rimmed Harley wheel, or buy a custom wheel. They are likely to be in that order of increasing cost!

 

I have been doing my homework on this... I would love to get a rim for a wider tire and also avoid inner tubes... if I stay with spokes, I will go with the dyna rim. If I go with a rim that does not requires inner tube, it is more difficult to find something in the HD list that I like... most likely will have to be after market and that gets expensive really fast...

I wonder if I can make these work... I am guessing that the rear will not be an issue... but pretty sure the front will not work...

 

Wachuko, I think that model has a 6" wide rim, which may be too much! There are several models of Harley with 4.5" rims, notably the Deuce and it's solid cast wheel, also some Dynas had that width. They can be got very cheap secondhand on Ebay and I have one on my Glide, with a 160/70 tyre. An alternative (too wide for my Glide) is a 170/60, but even that rim is narrow for a 180 wide tyre, which seems to like a 5" rim.

 

I thought it would work based on the tire it had... 180/70B16 77H But I forgot to take my caliper to measure how wide the rim was... darn it... back to the drawing board...

You may just be right after all! I assumed it was one of the later models that have a 200mm tyre. Don't scrub your idea too soon.....
