Clutch or tranny problem?

Clutch or tranny problem?
A few days ago, while taking off from a light, my 2000 sporty seemed to slip a bit as I released the clutch. The same thing happened at the next light, and then started slipping when I just rolled on the gas. Very soon after, it would not go at all, and sounded like the clutch plates were all chewed up. Got it home on a trailer. I figured the clutch was worn, so replaced the plates with a Barnett clutch set. (However, the old clutch appeared to still have some life in it. 43K miles on stock clutch.)
Put it all back together and here's what I've got:
* Engine running, bike in neutral = no issue.
* Pull in clutch lever = no issue.
* Shift into 1st, (or second), with clutch lever still pulled, and hear all kinds of grinding, rubbing, horrible noises coming from 'down there'.
* Release clutch lever and bike don't move and noise stays the same.
Anyone have an idea? I'm thinking transmission...
Thanks
