Default Sportster trans issue

Hi I have a 03 sportster 1200c giving me trans issues start bike and put in first gear no prob start letting cluch out and hear clanking coming from primary area some times Manley after coming to stop. Also have issue when taking off in first and only first gear ,when I accelerate bike jumps like coming in and out of gear poss. Not sure what it may be debating on taking apart and inspecting trans figured I would ask and see if any one had the same issue and may know what it is please help bike also has 30k I have family and do not have money to throw to wind thank you

Chances are you've got a worn out gear dog. It's a somewhat common issue in the higher mileage solid mounts. When you take off from a stop it will kind of jump/lurch at you a few times.

I've got the same issue. Just putting off the fix. I'll live with the gear jumping/lurching until then.

Requires pulling and disassembling the transmission. For me, that's no problem, just an inconvenience. After doing that and more for customers, it's easy, just a pain in the ***.

I don't know you, so it could be something you refuse to touch or a similar easy task. Got a service manual?

Yep do you know where I can go to get new gears and gaskets for the bike

Would realy like to not go through harley and pay for brand name again kinda on budget with family and all

You may have a gear with one dog left. This belongs to another Sporty expert on here. Shift lever could be bent.
