For the gears I only know of two options, HD and Andrews. Most of the aftermarket companies only sell them by the set, where as HD will sell the individual gear. The HD part has been revised, and according to reports and my insider information, does not have the same issue as our early millennium models. I don't know 100% on the Andrews option because I didn't research it much.

The issue was reported to be poor heat treating/case hardening of the dogs, causing wear to the leading edges. Over time, this eventually wears them down. In my experience, it is worsened by year-round riders like myself, since high idles in the cold mean more shock loading on the dogs when you engage 1st through 3rd gear on those cold winter mornings. (My solution temporarily is an adjustable idle screw, love it.)

Gaskets can be had all over. Cometic, James Gaskets, H-D, NRHS, HammerPerf, JP Cycles, DennisKirk, etc.

I doubt the price difference is worth the piece of mind of using Andrews or Harley versus some Chinese part of dubious metallurgy.

28k miles I broke the dogs off my mainshaft 1st gear somehow.. pulled the tranny and replaced mainshaft 1st gear. Got it zipped up and still surge. Replaced stock clutch with alto carbonite...still surge...not all the time. It will almost buck in first gear at times.
Is it the shifter forks not moving the gear quick enough and holding it so the dogs can engage at the slow speed(seen a mod for this with springs in the cotterpins) or is this related to another gear?

This issue is countershaft 1st and countershaft 3rd. Mainshaft 1st wasn't affected.

Thanks. Now I have a winter project to look into. I had no idea about my mainshaft 1st gear dogs until I lost 4th gear coming home. I thought for sure I would be all fixed after tearing down the tranny to replace that. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for the reply.
