You're going to get many different answers. I learned on a Sportster years ago. I'm now on my 3rd. That said, I did ride dirt bikes and mopeds as a kid.

You really need to take the MSF, Riders Edge course or their equivalent.

as Baka stated, you're going to get a lot of different opinions. Personally, I have a 883L in the garage and it's a lot of fun to ride. It belongs to my son as his first bike and he really enjoys it. I have a co-worker that took hers to Sturgis from Calfornia but she's pretty small.
Sportsters seem to hold their value really well so it's very feasible that you could get your money back after your finished with it.

If you have dirt bike experience then I think the Sportster is as good as any to learn on. Although it may not be the easiest to learn on, once you learn on one as your first bike, you'll pretty much be able to ride anything. Just use caution as you would any other bike.

Practice, practice, practice. In an empty parking lot is best.

Many Sportster owners tour long distances on their bikes. Myself included. A lot of us are not tiny either.

Thanks guys! This is the **** I want to hear! All I've been hearing is how Harley's suck, they die, and that Japanese bikes are the way of life. I just want a Loud *** Harley (American made!)!! The way I've been looking at it, new Harley's are fool proof. Hell, anything is fool proof if you take care of it (oil changes on time, or early, other fluid changes, tire up keeps, keeping the thing in a garage, covered) that's what im thinking is the key to a long lifed bike

My SuperLow is my first Sporty, although I have owned other Harleys. I like mine! You are likely to find that the ride quality isn't up to much, but that is a Sporty problem and we can help sort that out.

My first Harley was an 883 back in 95 and since then I have went up in models and then back to the sportster, I personally think the Sportster is one of the best HD's for my type of riding, it really doesn't matter if it is your first, middle or last, some like them Big and slow and some like myself, like them light, nimble and fast. Now I as well came from dirt bikes and super sports but for a first bike you can't go wrong with an 883.
