RE: primary adjustment ?
1st, you can use the same oil in the primary as the engine, but you cannot use the same oil in the engine as you would use in the tranny! Confused yet?

Ahhhh soooo......whirring is different than a whining. First thing I would check for a whiring is the belt. Any way to get a floor jack under the back end? Get the wheels up, block it with jack stands or such and visually inspect the belt for uneven wear. Maybe even get the whells rolling to trace it down. Wish I was there to give you a hand. I kinda like odd problems like this.

I wish you were here to check this outtoo. Or may be I wish I was where you are. I love the food down there. I rode about 150 miles today trying every combination of stopping techniques I could think of. I've found that if I don't pull the clutch in too soon and let the engine do the braking till I get close to a stop and rev the engine with the clutch in as I'm stopping the sound pretty well is not there. How's that for confusing? I think I will jack the rear end up roll the wheelsand see what it sounds like.

RE: primary adjustment ?
I had a 96 1200 that I put 50K on in 4 years. I was still running strong when I traded for a St Bob. I put Castrol 20-50 syntec blend in the engine and trans/pri. I liked it for the engine but not in the pri, especially in summer temps. I thought it was too noisy. I putCoastal 90w syn blend gear oil in the trans/pri. I was quieter and shifted smoother. I also installed a m6 auto tensioner on the primary. Is your noise present all the time, at idle in neutral, or only when moving? Is the noise there when you coast with the engine off? Noisy at idle in neutral, I would say the primary chain adjustment. Noisy when moving engine on or off, I would look at the trans main shaft bearings. I don't remember if it was in 02 or 04 that HD stopped putting the trap door in the trans. Before that, you could access the gears thru the trap door; after that, you would have to split the engine cases. That's my 2 (make that 4) cents worth.

ss337 For some reson it never even occured to me to turn the engine off and coast to see it the noise is present then. No, it doesn't do it in neutral when stopped. It also makes no difference if the clutch is in or out. Only when rolling to a stop. It doesn't make the noise when I take off either and if I rev the engine while stopping the whirring sound isn't near as bad and sometimes doesn't happen at all. Man, this is driving me nuts! An independant bike mech. said to bring it in to him next week and he would check it out for me for nothing. I think that's what I'm going to do.

RE: primary adjustment ?
I use HD Screaming Eagle Syn3 in both engine and primary, 32 oz. in primary, and only bring engine oil level up to 1/2 way between the add and the full mark, any more than that and you will get oil blowing thru the air filter.
Smooth shifting, no oil around air filter, and no noises.
