sportster line
ive heard that even though harley sells a lot of sportsters they dont make much money off of them. all the profits come from other models. this dosent sound quite right cause why would the company keep mass producing a line thats no longer profitable? or is it just that the sporty is the entry level harley thats needed to attract new customers? anyway i love sportys.

I have yet to see a product stay on the market for 50 years because they lose money and thinking they lose money to get you hooked is a big fairy tail .
of course they dont make as much money off a sporty as they do a big twin , it also dont cost as much to manufacture a sporty as it does an e-glide.

Sothat's what they got going on. Getcha in the door, buy you a cream soda, schmooze you all over a Sportster, then POW! they gang up on ya, telling you that you'll be wanting to upgrade within a week of ownership, why not just skip that step and do it now, all the cool kids are riding the BT's, etc., etc...[sm=lildevil.gif]
If the salesmen circle around you and start snapping their fingers, it may be time to check ebay.

They don't make as much money off an 883 as they do a 1200... the same thing when you go to big twins... they don't make as much off a base model as they do one that is decked out...
Most sales people work on a comission... 20-25 percent over cost... or something like that...
The more the mark-up on a particular bike the more the salesman can make... so it's only logical that he tries to sell you on the biggest... baddest... most expensive bike he can...
The mark of a good saleman is how smooth he is in trying to move you from one model to the next without cutting down the bike/car you were first interested...
One thing you have to remember... no matter how smooth they are... no matter how much pressure they try to put you under...
You hold all the marbles... until you sign those papers... they got nothing...
Hell... if you don't like your salesman... ask for another... one you can get along with or gives you more/honest info... don't be afraid to take charge... it's your money...
Sure they may have the bike you want... but so do other Harley dealers... you don't have to make it a one stop shop thing...
Ok... I'm done... lol

All what is said here is true for the most part... every line has it's models... each model has more or different stuff installed on it... not unlike car dealerships...
