Default oil change

Will be changing oil for the the first time from when I got my 2003 1200C old owner said he uses syn3 20/50 in both holes don't know that much about syn oil. The bike seems to operate great.Just wondering about the foam I get in the tank when I check it after riding. Will it foam in the trans or am I over thinking this???

Lots of Sporty owners use 20-50 syn in both holes, probably because Harley recommends it. Personally I use ATF in the trans... it has superior detergent and anti-foam properties.

If your oil is foaming, change to a different brand. It is probably due to the particular additives that oil brand uses. Synthetic oils are not necessary and in any event are made to meet the same specs as dyno oils. Use an engine oil designed for diesels or air-cooled V-twins.

I see some air bubbles in mine right after riding but not any real foaming, if he was using syn3, I think you are fine, it is HD's oil after all. You might want to look into the HD Formula+ for your trans, don't know if there is any advantage to it over the syn3 in the gearbox, but it's what they are recommending now.

Lots of choices in oil, do a search, plenty of debate. Personally, I think the best oil is oil that is changed regularly, as long as it meets the mfg. recommendation on weight. I buy whatever is on sale at the time.

Mobil 1 20w50 in the engine & Mobil 1 75w90 in the primary for me. Lots of facts and opinions on oils.

Just don't forget to warm up your scoot, prior to draining the oil or you won't get it all out. Ask me how I know this. I also throw a little Seafoam in the oil and ride it 20 to 40 miles before draining it. Only fill it to half way up the dip stick so you don't have it puking out the a/c breathers.
