speedo not working correctly
New guy here first post, so don't chew me up too bad, I've been reading alot of posts looking for my answer. I own a 05 sportster 883 that the speedo pegs itself as soon as I turn on the key and stays there till I turn the key off(even then it still stays pegged sometimes).
The battery was dead ,so I gave it a jump from a battery charger that had a 55amp start boost. The bike never did start just clicked, the next day I got a new battery and got it started. Now my speedohas a mind of its own and pegs out. The odometer, lights, turn signals auto cancel all work. I took out the speed sensor and cleaned it (no trash on it when pulled out).
What I've been reading is that I burned up the speedo and need a new one.
By any chance do you think it might be the speed sensor?
I've taken apart the speedo and part # says 67406-04 on the back
I have called my local dealer and he says the part # is 67037-04A.
Online the # reads 67037-04 no A on end
So which part # is right for my bike?
Why are all the #s different wherever I look.
Maybe some other fix I missed?
Thanks so much for yor time.

The 67037-04A is correct for the speedo. The "A" on the end of the number just means that the original part 67037-04 has been revised/improved. If they put a B on the end then that would indicate the next revision.
Your speed sensor is HIGHLY unlikely to cause the speedo needle to peg when power is applied. It sounds to me like a fried speedo.

For a quick check of speedometer function, a “wow” test
can be performed. Press and hold odometer reset switch
then turn ignition switch ON.
Release reset switch.
Background lighting should illuminate,
gauge needle should sweep its full range of motion,
and check engine , battery and security indicator lamps
should illuminate.
The security lamp may illuminate even if the vehicle is not
equipped with a security system.
if this works then ur speedo is fine - if not check for codes -
and check for lose connections
If the turn signals flash six four-way flashes shortly after key
ON, it indicates a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been found
check for codes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While holding odometer reset switch in,
turn ignition switch to IGN.
Make sure Run/Stop switch is in
RUN position.
Release reset switch.
“diag” appears
go threw all the settings check for codes and note the numbers/codes if any
then reset them all

No codes shown. The needle does whatever it feels like but always stays pegged after taking it for a spin. This vid is turning the key on and off.

Try unplugging it and plugging it back in. Worth a try. The big chargers that have the ability to jump start may have had incorrect voltage. Hard to tell. My AGM battery has right on it to never use anything but a small milliamps charger on it. So who knows. My Harley tac does what your speedometer is doing in cold weather.

I have tried uplgging guage but still a no go.
I cleaned the battery(brand new) connections. Working on cleaning other ends of cables now.
bike off=12.74 v
running=14.10v choke half on
little gas on =14.12v
The bike runs and starts just fine with everthing working but the wrong needle output.
Thanks so much for the replies
