2011 Iron 883 battery issues

You can monitor the health of the battery by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals (or at the plug in for your battery tender adaptor if you installed one) every morning after the bike has sat all night.
If you see the voltage slowly dropping from day to day or week to week, be aware that is an indication that your battery is being drained a bit more than its being charged.
Its a pretty good idea to plug it into the tender every night, but before I did that, I would want to have completely ruled out a charging issue.

If you don't have a volt meter so that you can check the charging system, I wouldn't wander too far from home. The Battery and Check Engine light coming on at the same time indicates a low battery voltage. Had your charging system been working, the lights wouldn't have come on while the bike was running.
Your Battery Tender recharged the battery, but if the charging system isn't working, you're likely to get 30 or 40 miles down the road and the lights will come on again. By the time the lights come on, you usually have enough power left to only make it a couple of miles before everything dies.
