I just filled up my old 883 yesterday, 75 miles/1.5 gallons. 50 mpg even hotrodding around town.

Did you compute that 33 mpg correctly? Seems awfully low.

I agree 66 seems a bit low. I ran until 88 one time before I filled up and that was all in town and have gone 126 all highway and backroads 45 - 60 mph. both times It never missed or acted like it was running out. I did have it do this one time before I started resetting the trip at fillups. It started missing under acceleration as the fuel sloshed it was so low. I try not to push it most of the time and am also planning on getting a fuel bottle for long trips

Neat test the OP did, but like was said it's never good to run an EFI vehicle out of fuel, that is a good way to burn the pump up or at least shorten it's life.

Default Thanks for the replies

The 66 miles in town tank was ridden pretty hard. Lots of stop and go and acceleration. It was the first tank, so I wanted to see the bike's power. usually don't ride that hard.

The 100 miles on the highway was ridden pretty tame. I had a pretty good wind at my back on the way up, but rode straight into it on the way back to keep it even.

I hadn't considered doing any damage. I hope it's ok. My goal was not really to figure out the mies per gallon, but rather the miles per tank. At least now I know roughly how far I can go on the highway when planning my trip this weekend.

I have never read any posts about an HD EFI Sportster having any issues when the bike occasionally runs out of gas, besides being out of gas. If these bikes are that fragile, than I have made a huge mistake ever buying one.

Yeah Ive run mine out of gas, about 105 miles. Doesnt hurt anything. Now if you had an empty tank and went out and turned your bike on several times a day.......that may do something............may.

My mileage in town is very poor, often in the mid-to-low 30's. The entire island has a speed limit of 25 mph and a lot of traffic lights. Unfortunately, the cops really enforce that speed limit, so there's no real way to "cheat". Off-island, where speed limits go from 35 to 65 mph, I get about 50-55 mpg on my '05 carbed XL1200R with re-jetted carb, S&S A/C, and the original SE II's with Big City Thunder Baffles.

well, I'm normally in to it a little heavy at times (throttle) so in the city I average around 40 mpg, 120 a tank (3.3) highway just under 50 mpg

With full stage one I commute in heavy stop sign/light/traffic every day and average in the low 30's. So that seems correct to me. On the highway I, also, get in the high 40's to low 50's depending on a multitude of factors.
