Didnt think to mention it earlier, but they could have re-used the original spring with that clutch and you would not have noticed any extra pull pressure. I assume the SE clutch has a higher spring rate...not really needed in your case.

If the clutch pull continues to feel to stiff, you can buy a easy pull device. Just google it they have them on ebay for under 50$. They are pretty to install.

At 82,xxx miles, mine is about due.
I asked the parts counter guy if the Screamin Eagle clutch will last 80 thousand miles.
He didn't think so.
I'll probably get it anyway, the stock clutch plates cost about $400/set.

Can I just buy a set of 9 friction plates for a '98+ Evo Big Twin?
Do I also need 8 steel discs?

The older Evo Big Twins use 6 clutch plates.
Is more better?

If you search you can find the kit without the spring as well. JP Cycle sells these also at a reduced price. http://www.jpcycles.com/product/630-310

If you check your Harley service manual it will give you the thickness specs and you can measure them, and you'll need to check for warp. If it's just burned up discs, then that's all you need to replace. If something came apart and damaged the assembly then you'll need it all.
