Default 87' sportster turn signal operation question

Dumb question, the turn signals on my 87' Sporty, are they designed to be held down to operate or should one click turn them on, then another click cancel them?

Right now I have to hold them down to blink and they stop when I release.

Is this normal?

I believe that is how they operate. My 1991 was the first year of "self cancelling" turn signals that you can push on, then push off. Or, they shut off after some distance driven as well.

It is normal operation for the 86-90 generation sportster to hold the button. I added the Penta-Star XP module from Signal Dynamics to my turn signals that allows me to push and release the button...the turn signals will flash either 10 times or 30 times depending on how long i hold the button. It also allowed me to remove my brake light and use only my turn signals as run/brake/turn lights. Cost about $100 and 15 mins to install.

Thanks, I'll look into that module!
