What does the **** between the throttle cables do?

It locks your throttle to keep the rpm's up,on the carbed bikes we use it to warm the bike up.

Nothing. The cables on later model Harley's (your bike included) are Teflon lined and not intended to be lubed.
If you do feel you need to lube it for some reason, use Dri-Slide. You can find it in most sporting goods stores that sell firearms.

It would be nice if the documentation were updated, since it states to "check, adjust and lubricate" for 2012 Sportsters. I did my 1,000 mile service and whether or not to lubricate was confusing.

My **** does nothing, it broke off 23 years ago and I never replaced it.
Never could figure out WTF it does anyway. I heard it was for holding the bike at higher RPM's so you could check spark advance in the olden days.
