So I just went back and looked at about 10 of my recorded sessions from when I was using smarttune and gathering data. Most of my runs took place in cooler weather. Between Mid March to end of April the air temp was about 50f which is cooler than the weather I usually ride in.
once the bike was warmed up, and I was hard on the throttle gathering data my engine temps ran between 355 - 385 and were in direct relation to my engine rpms. When I was close to redline the temp was close to or in the 80s and just cruising was 360-370. Sounds like you guys are running in a lot warmer weather than when I was so your temps should be a bit higher.

I'm beginning to think there isnt really a problem here after all. If a few more riders can share input it will tell the tale. Kind of like what an old rodder told me years ago when I was a kid...said the worst thing you could put on a engine was an oil pressure gauge. It will worry you to death looking at it lol.

I truly appreciate everyone's input on this. Again, it just sounds like the 2012 and newer Sporties run hot. My temps may not be out of the norm at all. That said, I'm still going to have the dealership Dyno it and diagnose the heat. May be nothing but I'd like to be sure. If anything, maybe I'll have some definitives to share with the forum so the guys/gals with newer model conversions know what to expect. I don't want to link to another forum on here, but three are a few threads out there discussing the heat on Sportsters and 400F temps seem to be fairly normal across the board.

I am willing to bet that when people say that the newer sportsters run hot they are speaking about from the factory with the stock injection/timing configuration...if you change those, it should run the same (or even cooler as the newer bikes have bigger fins) as the older bikes....If I were you I would verify the temperature with a different thermometer, you can get a infrared thermometer for around $20 I think...just to see if the temp. sender on the bike is working right...if the bike is really running hot you may have something binding such as tight rings...

I used an infrared thermometer on mine and the readings agreed with what my PowerVision was displaying. I can reduce the heat slightly with lots more fuel but I'm leaning to it not being out of the norm.
Contacted my dealership today, the tech there told me that my sportster would shut down somewhere above 500F.
I've also changed to Amsoil and didn't notice any significant heat reduction. I've heard once the engine loosens up a bit it might cool off but I'm just going to ride it and enjoy it.
