It gets better gas mileage than a 1200. In some jurisdictions, the insurance is less.
I had a blast riding my 883L today. It's fine for 65 mph on back roads, and has no trouble cruising the superslab at 75 mph, although admittedly it is a bit buzzy.

I have owned 2 Sportys. Both were 1200's. One was a 2004, and the other was a 2006. Very reliable bikes. Like all Harleys, mods were required to get the most out of them. Just a basic set of slip on mufflers, free flow AC, and proper carb jetting made them FLY.
I am a certified "gear head", so power and torque are what I crave. I love the feeling of a heavy bike accelerating quickly. No slugs for me. Can't comment on the 883 since I have not ridden one.
My advice if you go the 883 route: Do NOT dump a ton of money in to it unless you plan on keeping it forever. You will get hosed big time if you sell or trade it, as most do, after a year or less...
