only if you want to stop the leak...I always use a gasket sealer on valve covers for sportsters, I know they don't call for it, but I don't get leaks either.....I use permatex (http://www.permatex.com/products/pro...sealant-detail).... this stuff sticks like **** to a wool blanket...I put it on the metal base gasket and the rubber o-ring type gaskets for the valve covers...I use just a super very thin layer, I just smear it on with my finger no more than a few thousanths thick so that it doesn't squish out too much when you tighten it...In case you decide to get a bright idea in the future, never-ever use it on head gaskets....while you have it back apart check all the parts for warps, cracks, goughes, ect..

 

I tried three different gaskets(James,Cometic. and HD) to no avail. I cleaned all surfaces with brake cleaner and inspected all surfaces for pits,scratches and for flatness. I torqued every bolt as per HD directions and torque specifications. That sucker just wouldn't stop leaking. mrfikser gives good advice. I also spread a very thin coating of "The Right Stuff" on the metal gasket and made sure to not apply an excess amount. You don't want it to ooze into the interior of the rocker assembly because it can block some of the oil passages in the motor if it falls into the oil. I hated using it, but it was the only solution I found other than getting the rocker assembly and head machined for flatness. By the third time trying to fix the leak I was able to do it in less than 45 minutes. Good luck!...Keep your knees in the breeze

 

Yep, as a last resort I was also going to suggest using Permatex gasket sealer.
