If you think you're getting bad reaction to buying a Sportster then I'd like to suggest you tell the same people you're buying an Apple computer, PS3, a Hyundai or a cell phone that isn't crap plated crap filled piece of crap the phone companies are ripping us off with.

RE: New Sportster 1200 soon, why is this bad
[:@]Blah..blah...Sportster this.....blah....Sportster that. People who talk trash about the Sportster just ruin it for everyone else.[:@] I think some of the worst offenders are other Harley riders. It's like this friggin' superiority complex or something. I think the whole thing is ridiculous! As was pointed out earlier, the Sporty has been around for 50 years. The longest lasting production bike HD has ever made...and still does. Just like a touring bike, the Sporty has it's place. They are not created for the same purpose. Therefore it's unfair to really compare the two. The Sporty has a narrow frame, is lighter and has a smaller motor. All around the Sporty is a much smaller package than an Ultra. Those factors are what makes the Sporty nimble, quicker and all around more fun to ride. The Sporty doesn't need to have a TC motor because it isn't an 800+ lb bike. Good grief! My bike, an Ultra weighs nearly twice as much as a Sportster. It's need a larger motor to deal with the weight. Can you imagine an Ultra or Road Glide with an 883 or 1200?
So, I think you should buy the Sportster and ignore what the others think. Unless they're paying for your new bike...their opinions don't matter.
Ride on!

Your question is wrong, whylee ("why is this bad"). It isn't bad in the first place. What you are hearing is from people who don't own a Sportster, have never owned a Sportster, and probably never will be able to own a Sporter. If you had asked "Why is it good," you would have gotten 200 responses on this forum from people who know why it's good.

RE: New Sportster 1200 soon, why is this bad
I frequently ride with a large group of guys and girls that are on Big Twin bikes. I've never gotten anything but respect from them. They are especially respectful, when I show up 200 miles away from home in17 degree temps without a windshield.
That happened 3 weeks ago in Birmingham, AL. It was for a Patriot Guard Mission. When I arrived at the staging area, there were only 3 other bikes there, and I had not previously met any of those guys. Before I could get my helmet, gloves, etc etc off, one of the guys came over to me, and said "I don't know what your name is, but you're out here riding in this weather, with out of state tags and no windshield, so I'm just gonna call you Sir." I rode with that guy again yesterday, and when I pulled up, he came over, gave me a big biker handshake and hug, and said "How is Sir SportyPig"
There is also a local biker bar here, that frequently will have over 100 bikes on a nice weekend afternoon in the summer. No body there has ever said anything negative about my Sporty. There is one other guy that is at the bar about 5 days a week that rides a Sportster, they do give him hell about it. Reason being, his personality is such that just begs to be given hell, and about the only riding he does on his Sporty is to ride from his house to the bar, which is only about 3 miles.
Only negative experience was from a RUB. Now, I've know this guy for several years before I even knew the term RUB, trust me, he is a RUB in every way possible. I was riding and needed to take a pi$$ break. I stopped in a biker bar (not the same one mentioned above) and this guy was there. He lives about 3 miles away, so I guess that was a long ride for him. Anyway, he loudly made some comment aboutmy Sportster in order to embarass me and make himself look like a big man in front of several of the patrons. I quickly fired back and ask how many miles he had on his 4 year old chrommed out Fatboy. After he responded with "almost 2,000", I said, "Oh, I see you have a garage decoration, not a motorcycle. Well, the laughter from the crowd he was trying to impress, left him being the one with a red face, not me.
Bottom line, ride what you want, and don't take any crap off of anyone for riding a Sportster. As was previous said, those comments usually come from either a RUB, or someone that doesn't have a bike at all. Most of the Big Twin guys I know, are former Sporty riders, and they generally say, "I really miss that bike, it was a lot of fun."
