then you need some tuning. if you can afford a thundermax or powervision i would get one and be able to do your own tuning. if not there are cheaper alternatives, but you won't get the same results. i think you are probably running lean. not good for an engine. i would stay off the throttle if you can ride and not cause it to ping until your able to correct this problem. it will cause damage if you keep doing it.

what mods have been done to air cleaner and exhaust? if they have been changed you need a tuner for sure.

Well, nothing has been done to the air cleaner, and it has stock exhaust but previous owner drilled out or removed the baffles. Im sure that is the problem. I ordered a powervision since I will be getting an exhaust and air cleaner soon. Thanks for the help.

So I got my PowerVision yesterday and installed the improved stock map since Im running stock a/c and drilled baffles. Rode it today and that noise I was getting has gone away. Pretty impressed with everything the PV can do and how easy it is to use. Would definitely recommend.

if you have detonation you would need to rejet to richen your mixture. i'm not a carb guy so you'll have to ask others for suggestions on which jets though.

He actually brought his bike into the dealer and they tore it all apart and told him everything is normal. They even ended up charging him because nothing was wrong so thats why I'm a little hesitant to bring mine in.

From what I've read, it seems the people with the Iron and 48 complain about this the most. It seems to be because of the smaller/narrower gas tank.
On my bike if I put my left leg up tight against the bike it almost goes away completely. The sportsters with the larger tanks seem to block the noise (just like putting your leg against the bike)
It still doesn't seem normal but I have a lot of people tell me not to worry about it.. I have a 3 year warranty so I guess if she blows, then she blows.. Time will tell I guess.
it's only a problem because harley wants to meet the epa laws and be able to claim 50+ mpg. these bikes much prefer to run on the rich side.
