You're going to get a hundred different answers to the question including mine. To answer your question I run RevTech 25w60 dino oil, it actually made my engine quieter and Sportster engines can stand a lot of that. I run Harley Formula+ in the tranny. As to empirical proof, I ain't got any and neither will any one else except cHarlie.

you seem to have far more choice over there in oils
over here not much choice in the 20/50 region, more so in the 10/40s
thinking of fitting oil cooler and changing oil every 2_3000 miles instead of the 5000 as in the hand book
do not know what Harley tolerances build ther motors to, if 10/40 is a bit on the thin side

Good point on the OP's part w/oil availability issue(s)...guessing it's not as abundant over there vs. USA..?? If you can locate another cycle dealer/shop & see if they carry something in the 20W/50 weight, it's the preferred. Otherwise - run the 10W/40 b/c it's not as extreme (conditions) there and any additives (i.e. ZX1) are usually "smoke & mirrors" so not my cup-o-tea...JMO. Cheers!

Motul seems to be a well thought of brand available on your side of the pond.
You want to stay with a 15w-50 or 20w-50 oil unless your daily high temps are going to be below 5*C, then it's OK to run 10w40. (This is spelled out in the Owners Manual)
Quality motor oils have well engineered additive packages. Throwing in "magic" additives may do more harm than good by upsetting the existing oils additive package.
I can't think of any reason to need an oil cooler in England. I live in the southern part of the US where temps routinely run in the 90's (33+*C) and have never needed an oil cooler in over 90,000 miles.
Running a quality brand synthetic oil in your motor instead of mineral oil, will typically reduce your oil temps by 7-10*C.
If your using a quality synthetic motor oil, I see no reason to change it more often than the recommended 5,000 mile interval. I periodically send my used oil (Mobil-1 15w50) off for analysis by Blackstone Labs, and all reports indicate my oil is still in good shape when drained at the 5,000 point and recommends that I extend the change interval. I don't extend the interval, but it's nice to know that I can go past 5,000 if needed without worrying about it.
