Default why do they say the sportster has a 4.5 Gal Tank??

I have the 2006 XL1200C, and the tank is no where close to 4.5 gallons... I always run out somewhere around 2.8 gallons. which seems about right, it's a small looking tank..

what's the deal with that 4.5 gallon claim?

2.8 is when you run out? Or is that when you fill up? 2 completely different things.

I'll run out around 2.8 and have to switch to reserve,, which I assume would get you about 30 miles at most??,,,,I don't know, I never ran it out of gas,,,, but It's hard to believe it's really 4.5 gallons.

My fuel light came on today about a quarter mile from the gas station so I stopped and filled it up and it held around 2.8 gallons, I can't remember exactly tho.

only way to tell how much your tank will hold is to completely drain it then fill it up.

Yea me to... 2010 1200c light comes at 80- 105 miles on the clock ride it to 130 and takes 3.5 to fill. So why doesn't it come on at at the 130 mark and still have a gallon left.. I know use the odometer cause light doesn't work but mine is very consistied to this.

It's a 4.5 why is that so hard to believe. If you feel the need to convince yourself pull off the tank and weigh it both wet and dry and you will have your answer. As to running out of gas there are so many other variables that can affect that. Mods, riding style etc....

so if it's really 4.5 gallons and we hit reserve around 2.8 gallons, that means there is 1.7 gallons of reserve,,,, I guess some of the fuel sits in the bottom and is unusable.

the tank may have a volume of 4.5 gallons, but only about 3.5 gallons of it is usable.

it's a selling point, people buy this bike thinking they are going to get a fuel range of atleast 150 miles....but I'm not complaining because I really like the look of the tank and I'm glad they didn't make it bigger.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but after reading on here and other places on the web, the older models have the 4.5, but mine at least has the 3.3 gal tank and the mileage is correct for that size and the fuel light coming on. Mine uses 2.2 gal before light comes on and goes 100 miles on avg.
