I was changing the rocker covers on my bike and i was 99.999% done, I was torquing down the last bolt when i noticed that the bolt just kept spinning. it refused to torque. i pulled the bolt out and it brought, with it, the threads from the lower(upper, whatever) rocker box. i looked on in horror.

After picking the threads out of the bolts threads, i put the bolt back in and tightened it to hand tight. there must be some thread remaining. I think that there may have been some funny business on the conversion but, let's not jump to conclusions. I took a ride to see how bad this situation was and it was fine for about 40 miles then, out of nowhere, there was oil running from the bolt location. guess it was a temp related failure. anyway...

I talked to a guy at the dealer and here and he quoted me $300+ .... nope


I'm going to attempt a heli-coil / perma-thread fix before coughing up $300+.

Any advice?




I'm going to replace all of the bolts just because and one was mauled by John Hamfist... i hate that guy.



so far i'm buying:
8 X p/n: 882 (bolts)
8 X p/n: 63858-49 (washers)

2 X new inner
2 X outer gaskets

Already ordered permacoil kit 1208-104 [is that the right size?] but, i think heli-coil might be better.... open to advice here.

anything else i need?

Don't know about perma coil, but in 30+ years in auto transmission repair heli coil was all I used and never a problem. Take your time and you should be ok.
