The Truth About 883 Conversions?
#22
No doubt...fun factor is ver high. I love my Streetglide but by comparison it feels heavy and soft. This little 883 feels raw, nimble and quick. Hard to believe it cost so little...about the price of a quad runner!

I disagree 150%. my 1200 ran me $5350 ($4400 for 2007 883 w/ 187 miles from abused husband who's wife forced the sale + $1350 for official SE 1200 kit and conversion - $400 received for old parts from 883 sold on ebay) zippier than stock 1200, thank you very much. still insured as an 883.
i went with the official kit so i could point fingers at hd if i had problems. up to op at the end of the day.

I paid $4800 for my 2007 XL1200R...cheaper than what you paid to turn an 883 into a 1200. So I disagree with you 150%...So discussing used, I still did better than your deal for an 1200 worth more than an 883 with a kit. I pay less than $280 a year for full coverage on my 1200....hardly a deal buster.
If you read my post fully, you will see I said there are reasons to buy an 883. But if you want a 1200...buying one is not cost prohibitive and you can find them used if you want to discuss use then as cheap or cheaper than an 883 and then buying a kit and paying for someone to install it.

I'm not talking used...too many variables and prices. My comments are directed at buying a new 883 and buying the kit and paying someone to do the work.

i never buy rides new, i don't see the sense in it unless i'm getting it super custom. like a Porsche with some crazy color combo and my name in the seats or a custom built monster. it just gets you temporary bragging rights and a punch in the wallet.
also, as a newbie... "i think" it was better for me to have the 883 then move to the 1200. i probably would have killed myself with a 1200 if i had it first. i came from honda vt500c. it was a huge change. going straight to 1200 probably would not have worked out well.

I hate your savings and your beautiful dual disk front brake having bike! how dare you get a better deal! who do you think you are getting over like that? stop it at once. how many miles were on the 1200r? that's a great deal.

The bike had 2200 miles on it. I bought it at a KIA dealership of all places. The previous owner "found" he didn't really like riding (but he bought it as his buddies had bikes). So, he traded it in on a KIA... My good luck.
As stated, I have owned 883 sportsters NOTHING WRONG with them at all.
My recommendation is to buy a 1200 first as getting a 883 and later upgrading can be around the same price of a 1200 so why not just get a 1200?
Understand, not for everyone and I can see times when getting the 883 and later upgrading it is a good way to go.

LOL...Hey, I waited 10 months for this deal. I wanted a Roadster and EFI so rare to find in my area. I almost bought a 883R. Nice looking bikes. I sold my 2007 Ultra Glide and going to an 883 would have been hard for me, but...
