Run the bike until its low (fuel light on) remove the fuel line on tank using quick disconnect.
Undo the electrical connector to the tank.
remove the front and rear tank bolts.
With the tank removed (so you can roll on side to keep gas from running out. Remove the bolts that hold the fuel pump assembly to the tank.
you also might purchase a new gasket for the assembly.
A lot of people reuse the original gasket. But its better to be prepared and have it and not needed, than to need it and not have it. The gasket can be pinched and leak only to hear the dealer "we don't stock that gasket, but I can order one for you. It'll take about 10 days to 2 weeks"
Ask me how I know that one.

1 more thing to check is the intake seals. Leaking seals will lose power and also cause a backfire in certain cases
