So I just installed the HD Tune (or "download")
I Actually ordered the VIED and its still in the box I have.....I really was worried about warranty issues and decided to try the factory stuff first. I have an SS Muscle AC now and will be getting VH 3 inch SLips in a couple of days. When I first got it back from the dealer, the bike was sputtering a bit when i first started it up....I guess the ECU had to take some time to adapt. I rode it for 5 miles or so and it adapted pretty well. Runs really smooth and I am very happy with it
The shifts are smoother and also idle. Very good so far. After I install the VH slips I'll report again. SO far so good with my Sporty
LOVE MY RIDE.

I did the intake and V&H slip-on's, I also had the download performed but I still noticed the motor getting overly hot and thou I thought the bike was running well I kept reading the forums and speaking to other riders and the word "Tuner" kept coming up. Knowing I am going to keep this bike for many years and wanting it to run at its best is a Big concern of mine so I went and got a Tuner.
I bought the Power Commander V had it installed and Dyno'ed and after riding it I realized how shitty the motor was performing prior to the Tuner install. I can't stress enough how important it is to add a tuner or at least VIED's to get the motor out of the lean condition. Most Harley Dealers will tell you the download is fine but take it from another rider that is BS.

While a tuner is usually the best route, one key point to keep in mind is that the HD stage one map/download is based on the use of SE slip ons and SE A/C. When HD made that map those are the components they used on the dyno to create it. The map is likely not going to run as well when you are using any other brand A/C and exhaust since the VE tables of the map will be possibly quite different. When you install the map without SE components you won't get the best results.
That being said, the stage one map is still going to be lean running due to the fact it has to meet the US EPA regulations. I also know that many people have installed the HD map with no issues when using the SE components. Not everyone cares about optimal tuning, they just know they get on their bikes and it seems to run good to them.
I have a custom tune on my bike and it runs very well. It still gets hot, it's an air cooled machine. I hear people all the time comment on how they can "feel" how much cooler their bike is running with a good tune. Without a guage, I can't tell, hot is hot to me whether it's 200 degrees or 250 degrees.
