Anyways now that I have your attention


I just bought a 2000 sportster 883 hugger for my first harley, I went to change the plugs in my bike and noticed the previous owner was running 8s for the plugs instead of 7s, 8 is a cooler plug then a 7 right?

He said he had the "local mechanic shop" jet the new pips, there 2" drag pipes from cycle shack. I thinking that there verison of jetting is putting a cooler plug in?? When I went to pull the plugs they were a whiteish tan cooler, id rather have it on the richer side with the right plugs, and ideas??

 

I want to rejet them but id rather have someone point me in the right direction, I also buy a s&s air cleaner so I want to jet it with that in mind, iv never jetted a motorcyle so any help would be great,

 

I think there's a carb jetting "sticky" on this forum, and there is a lot over on xlforum.net about jetting your configuration. Sounds like your plugs look pretty good, I think light tan ceramic is a good reading, that's what mine look like, with gray ground electrode. I'm running a stock plug on mine.

jetting is pretty easy, just remove the float bowl from the bottom of the carb. there are 2 jets (low and main) the low is prolly fine, the main for your bike should be either a 165, 170 maybe a 175 (probably not that big)...the jets are marked right on them the size and come in 5 number increments (150,155,160 etc)...they just screw in and out, the low jet can be adjusted with the mix screw up to a point, if you find you can't get a good idle no matter how you adjust the mixture screw you may have to go up a size with the slow jet...if the bike is running good and you say the plugs look good I would just ride it for awhile a get used to how the bike runs, if it seems to not run real strong you might try going up one size in the main jet and see if it helps...

 

I just drill a hole in the bottom of my blinker and the fluid just drains out then plug it with gum for the next change.

 

How do u jet ur pipes I would like to do that. I've heard of jeting a carb but not pipes

 

I think he means the carb was re-jetted to accomodate the new pipes.

Yeahh it runs great I'm just a little parinod, iv lost a couple of snowmobiles running to lean, I also have a aftermarket air cleaning I want to throw on so ill try stepping it up a notch with the jet

The only thing I'm not sure about is the plus will I still be fine if I put the right plugs back into it?
