So far the hammer and punch/chisel sounds like the best bet to me.
So when you say use a punch/chisel you mean just make a bunch of small circular dimple's all over the bars where they are going to be in the clamps? *edit* Found a picture on another site, You mean like this:

Or if you used a chisel, a bunch of slits?

I'm just trying to envision how to do this without having to unhook all my cables and wires. I was hoping I could loosen the clamp and remove the top part then knurl the part of the bar that is showing and rotate it a bit to get all the way around.

And what about using some clear silicone epoxy inside the clamps? that should hold it right?

I like to use the drywall sanding screen because it grip on the bars and the clamps. Never had bars slip when using it.

This method works like a champ, just as well as 500-600 grit sandpaper. My bro has used both and actually got the best results using skateboard grip tape. It worked so well, he wore our the stock riser bushings and ended up installing solid riser bushings.

Yep, like the picture shows. You should be able to do it with a buddy's help. Remove the top part of the clamp. He holds the bars, and his beer. You hammer away. Cover tins with heavy moving blanket just incase something goes flying or your buddy decides to go grab another beer without alerting you first.

Difference is that with apes you've got a lot of leverage to push the bars around.
