Default 07 nightster custom exhaust build

07 nightster custom exhaust build-har.jpgHello brand new to forum. Im a welder and fabricator and recently built a set of 2 3/8 open pipes. No baffles or any back pressure. Ran bike upon completion of pipes out of curiosity and noticed bike was running way leaner than i was expecting. With no rush to use the bike i was planning on buying a programmer or getting a remap from dealer. With how lean the bike was running and how hot the pipes got from only about a minute of running im hesitant to ride bike to dealer 5 minute ride. Bike is completley stock other than new exhaust. Are baffles necsessary even with a programmer/remap?

2-3/8 is too large a diameter to work well. Even with a programmer/remap they will not ever be really right. Besides being too lean you'll probably get some pretty bad reversion. And open pipes always have a dip in the torque curve, usually in the 2500 - 3500rpm area. if you look at well-designed large diameter pipes they are stepped, starting small and ending up at the final diameter. Do something to get some back pressure before doing a tune.

Never been to nightrider. Being that i have already made the pipes Will inserting baffles and getting the EFI closer to "right" allow the motor to perform ok?

2 3/8' is just too big for a stock bike, its gonna kill your low end torque.
1 3/4' is the appropriate size. But since you want to stick with them, there are a number of companies where you can buy after market baffles:

www.khromewerks.com www.bigcitythunder.com are a couple.

You could also use lolli pops. You can google that. Thats a washer welded onto a bolt and put into the exhaust stream. You can also try DK Custom's Thunder Torque Inserts. I use them and they are great.

Hope this helps. Where you at in MI?

back pressure is not the enemy.

The exhaust reversion and actual harmonic tuning/ scavenging from too large of pipes is.
