Default Oil Change past due...

Hey guys,

I'm at about 11.5k miles on the odometer and I know that I'm past due for an oil change. So today I was calling around get some quotes on a oil change and a HD dealer asked if I needed to do a 10k service/maintenance while I'm at it. Which leads me hear to ask the question.

Can I put off the 10k service for another month or two? I'm tight on the $$ cause I'm moving out to another place at the end of May. After I get settled in then I'll be able to afford the service (mid June). If I use my bike I'll also put in another 2k-3k miles within that time frame. If I don't need to ride her, maybe just another 1k.

$8 for a filter & $30 for 3qts of oil so...for under $40 you can do it yourself...JMO.

YouTube search your bike type then add oil change, then do another search on your bike type and add primary fluid change. You'll see a list of good videos. That's how I learned before I found this forum. It'll only take you a half hour at best. Walmart has quarts of oil from valvoline for 3 bucks each. U only need three quarts. And one quart of primary fluid that'll run 8 bucks. Ten bucks for a filter and boom ur done.

Whether you or a dealer does it, can you afford to let it go for another 2-3k miles?

You can probably put off the 10k maintenance. There isn't anything on there that will cause the bike to break apart if it isn't performed at exactly 10k. You probably would get a better deal doing it all at once if you go to a dealer.

Just keep an eye for loose bolts or low oil level in the meantime. These bikes will take a lot of abuse and come roaring out the other side.

How many miles on the last oil change was it at 5k or 7.5 or never?
How long ago was it changed?
What kind of driving do you do, short trips, Interstate?
What does the oil look like?

So, you're already 1.5K miles overdue, and you want to know if it's OK to go another 2K-3K over that?
Since you don't adhere to recommended schedules, I guess we need to know how many miles ago was the last oil change?

EDIT: Since this is a 2005 bike and your this far overdue for the 10K service, the real question that comes to mind is:
How many YEARS has it been since the last oil change?????

Changing the engine oil or the transmission oil on a Sportster is about as difficult as a monkey peeling a banana. If you can understand how to use some simple tools, like chimpanzees, you can also learn to do it.

I sincerely hope your bike has had an oil change (or two) prior to your ownership.

Buy a service manual and it will tell you everything that is performed in the 10k service. Then look up how to do it (also in the manual), then do it!
Good oil = about $30
Oil Filter = about $6
Owning a manual, doing it yourself and saving a bundle now and in the future = Priceless!!!!!
