Paint Exhaust?

Paint Exhaust?
Thinking of going cheap on the slip-ons and getting Cycle Shack since they perform well too. As far as I know, they only come in chrome. Can chrome slip-ons be painted with high heat flat black and hold up? If so, any particular prep required? Any particular paint brand? Thanks in advance for the help.

Chrome is hard to get paint to stick on, but can be done. If you want to paint chrome sand, sand and sand them, I would starter with around 280 grit then work up to about 400, then paint them, The VHT high temp paint is good, but you have to follow the direactions-it says to bake the part after painted. I have never baked the parts i have painted and it seemsed to hold up, I painted dirtbike and quad exhaust, but they were not chome to start.

i checked this stuff out and they offer heat cycling as an alternative to baking on their instructions. was going to sand down my heat shields and use a satin clear on it so they don't rust.
so yeah, it should work practically the same.

Sand Blasting the Chrome pipes is the most effective way to get paint to adhere well extremely well. Of course as others have mentioned, a LOT of sanding will work too. If I were to sand chrome in prep for paint, which I have done, I would cross-sand so that you see horizontal & vertical sanding lines. Then when you're ready to paint the, give then 3 light dusting coats ... known as tack-coats. Then follow that with 3 wet-coats. Doing so will offer maximum paint adhesion. Though not everybody follows it, that is basically standard procedure in the industry.
