Default after market tachometer

has anyone on here with 2007+ gotten a mini tach to actually work ?

I have been through 3 installs / un-installs with one from a well known after market advertiser on here whom I will not name because I don't want say anything negative about because they have a good return policy.

the first tach I hooked exactly as the instructions & it registered maybe half of the actual rpm's . I called the vendor & customer service said I needed an adapter that was not listed on there web page . It was actually listed on their competitors ( huh !)
I get the adapter a week later, hook it up as the instructions & guess what ? I got nothing , it does the self check needle swing to max & back , then nothing with motor running .
Get a return authorization , go to UPS , wait another couple of weeks , get another Tach and another adapter ( 2 different mfrs mind you ) .
This time I have a good friend with 30+ year experience Harley mechanic with multiple levels of just about every certification one could have , hook it up . Guess what ? Same thing ...... nada .

any way , not like I didn't try , but after 3 installs & un installs i'm over it ..... big time !

guess i'll have to bite the bullet & buy the $300 HD combo Tach/Speedometer . sounds like that will work with the biggest b- tch being an additional part to make the fuel gauge work .

I have absolutley NO interest in that Speedway blue light digital whatchamacallit . it's a swinging needle or nothing .

So if anyone on here actually has on working on an EFI , please post a video & show me one working & how they hooked up there's up .

sorry if this was long winded & i'm sure someone want's to blast " did you use the search forum tool ?" . well yes i did , on multiple HD pages .
In fact ,I may post this msg on one of the other forums .

Maybe someone has had as much fun with this as I .

thanks

Do you really need a tach? Just listen to the sound of the motor.

need or want ? it would be nice to have for tuning , the only RPM i'm certain of , is the rev limiter . My ears aren't that accurate .

That makes sense. Alot of people want one just for cruising around the city and drop big money on gauges and go through issues too.

What about those small ones on eBay? They are like 60$. I think I've read good reviews. As long as you hook it up to the correct wire (negative tach signal wire for EFI)

I have the HD combo unit on mine. It was a bit of a PITA to install the sensor in the gas tank: seemed more like art than science. All the same, I really like the unit. (Unlike other folks on here, a bike just doesn't feel right without a tach.)

Just double check you have a good ground. That will mess up everything. I run an autometer tach. It is extremely accurate.
