splitting cases in frame

You lost a piston as in down into the case?
It may physically be possible to do so (I'm not sure it is), but by the time you have the motor that stripped down it won't be much more work to just pop off the motor mounts and pull the sucker out. It will make your life much easier.

There are some jobs which have no short cuts! If anything has gone down inside the crankcases the engine and oil pump need to be stripped and cleaned thoroughly. IMHO that is not a simple job and if you want to size up if it is something you can do yourself you need to get a factory service manual, for your model year.
There is a lot you can do while the engine is in the frame, because the frame serves as a way to support the engine while working on it, like removing heads and cylinders down to crankcases, taking off the timing gear and primary drive, etc. But getting inside the crankcase cavity is engine out.
