Need help on SuperTrapp XR Exhaust Finish
Just bought a 2003 Sportster 883R with some major upgrades including a SuperTrapp XR style exhaust. I am trying to figure out what material this exhaust is made out of or the what type of finish is on it.
I have researched online and have only found this exhaust to be made in 304 SS material with a natural stainless finish that will turn to a gold color after normal use. Which is typical with 304 SS.
The exhaust I have has an aluminum looking finish but looks like some type of coating. I am attaching pics and looking for anyone's input on this.

My guess is that they've been finished in "Jet-Hot" coating...you can see an area where it's chipped off on the weld of the top pipe...

To me it looks generic and I may have to take to a polisher and have removed. I like the natural stainless look especially when it starts to turn different colors from the heat.

bman, before you go nutzoid trying to remove it I think you should contact Jet-Hot and ask them what method they would recommend to best remove their product...since it's a pretty bad a$$ heat resistant ceramic coating, it may need to be bead blasted. If so, you're looking at a lot of work afterwards in just polishing alone, so it may not be worth it. Just a thought...

Thanks. I will be posting a lot more pics once the weather breaks here in Ohio. It sucks buying a new bike in the winter. But I couldn't pass up the deal on this one. Someone put a lot of money in this bike.

Just called Jet-Hot coatings and they gave me a few options to remove the coating on my own.
(1) Media blast the coating off and that could take some time.
(2) Remove coating by submerging in Drano and then neutralizing with vinegar/water.
(3) Send exhaust back and let them chemically remove it for $50.
I think I'm going to go with # 3 if I decide to have it removed.
