Default Breather Bolt question

2003 sportster with stock AC cover, KN filter inside.

I have the old "sportster oil blow by" I was told that "breather bolts" the ones with the mesh filter inside would solve the problem. has anyone used them? I have seen them in pictures used "outside" the AC, has anyone used them inside?

Two things, run your oil level down to the lower end of normal, two, don't lug the motor. Sportsters hate this, run her hard. As for the bolts you are referring to, if I understand what you are talking about, you would need to change the breather for them to fit, or at least modify it a bit.

Zimbob is correct, the breather bolts won't work with stock filter without some modification.

Also, per your manual, the oil level should be in between the lower and higher mark, and should be the correct viscosity.

If you are doing all this well and still getting a lot of blow-by, then replacing the umbrella valves may be in order.

The breather bolts do not cover up some other problem with the engine (bad umbrella valves, worn rings etc.)

What you can do to prevent oil dripping and general mess on a bike that is having excessive blow by due to worn parts, is use one of these breather systems with the filter up top. CLICKY

I like that DK system pictured with the breather mounted above so oil doesn't run down the hoses and saturate the filter, I think it would look a lot better with some stainless braided hose instead of the black rubber.

Huummm, yes, I have been running the oil a little below the halfway mark (checking it hot on the stand) I still get oil in the bottom of the filter case after 100 miles or so. Its a 2003 1200c with 10k on it...would the umbrella valves go that soon??

The relocater kit was my next thought....thank you all for your input!

...or grab some 1/2 bolts, plug the head breathers, tap your cam cover at the round section behind the oil filter with a 1/8-27 NPT, bend you some sheet alum to make a oil barrier, throw a 1/8 M NPTF with 3/8 barb, buy a krankvent etse and be done with it. On an 03, you may even have the port already in the cam cover, i can't remember if they already did away with it then or not.

There are some threads around somewhere on how to do this. I'll be glad to help out if you want to go this route.

Thanks for the offer Kont, I think i'm gonna buy a simple horse shoe breather kit and run a hose down under the frame, put a catch at the end. the breather bolts would have been easier, however it doesn't sound like they will fit with the KN filter with the stock housing.
