Need help with leaky front brake line
my 96 sportster developed a leak on a nipple under the triple tree. my bike has 14" ape hamgers and it was piped with tubing then on to a nipple and then a flex hose to the caliper. banjo fittings on both ends. the problem seems to be at the nipple end of the tubing and the nipple itself. I have a decent flaring kit but no ferrules or the tubing to do the job. If I could get my hands on a flex hose with flares on both ends and the nipple I can fix this.
does anyone know where I can get the little aluminum nipple?
is there an auto shop that may have what I need to replace the tubing?
the weather in jacksonville is really nice and I need to go riding yesterday.
thanks ahead for the help

I worked for a while as a welder/fabricator at a truck dealership and stretched and shortened many chassis', and one of the many issues encountered when doing this kind of work was modifying the fuel and brake lines to accomodate the new chassis length. There are rules to abide by when changing or servicing brake lines...as per DOT regulations there are to be no compression fittings used and all flare connection ends must be double flared. And just for trix to prove them wrong I tried a single flare...here's what I found:
*The thinner flare was easily overtightened...
*which compressed the tubing at the junction where the flare meets the straight section...
*which led to a crack at the same area...
*which got worse through vibration...
*which led to a leak...
If the rigid tube is the source of your leak and it's single flare, buy or borrow a double flare kit and cut off the bad end[s] and reflare [don't forget to slip the nut on the end before you flare!], or if you need to, buy a section of brake line and make totally new and reuse the nuts. Be sure to follow the instructions and use lubricant on the double flare and the spike dies for a nice smooth finish on the inside of the flare.
