For me there's a lot more to riding motorcycles than performance. The look and feel I get when I'm on my bike are just as important to me as how it performs. If all I wanted to do was ride fast, drag knees and stand on the front wheel, or ride down the rode in pampered comfort, I can think of a lot of other bikes that'll do those things a lot better than a Sportster right off the showroom floor. No mods required.

I own a Harley because of the way I feel when I ride it. I ride a Sportster because of all the Harleys it is the closest fit to the kind of riding I like to do most of the time, and right now I can't afford more than one motorcycle. And I spent a lot of time and a bit of money creating my highly modified/customized Nightster because I wanted a bike that was uniquely mine. It performs great and is more than comfortable enough for my 57 year old skinny ***. I love my bike. But I would not I love it nearly as much if it didn't look and sound the way it does. Put another way, I love riding. But some rides are better than others. And I didn't realize just how much I loved riding before I made my Nightster look and sound just the way I wanted it to. ymmv

Ride it a while, figure out what you and the machine wnat from each other.

Don't be in a hurry to f*ck it up w/poorly thought out "improvements" that detract from the machine's ability to do what you want it to do. If you want a "cool-*** old skool rigid chopper" - go cut up an XS650 Yamaha that you picked up for free for hauling it out behind someone's shed.

Well said that man. Everyone has different reasons for the mods they choose and the ones they stay clear of. Different strokes for different folks! Depends what you want out of the bike.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out man.

H-D ownership has many forms. Some ride more than others, some wrench more. It's all good.

I'm not worried about being faster either....I just want crazy power when I whack it. You can't beat the sound of a high hp sportster with compression and big bump sticks. Doesn't matter what exhaust is on it....ha
