Default Going from 883 to 1250.......

I was wondering if you have an 883 sportster and decide to bore it out to a 1250, Do you have to register it as a 1250? I ask this because of insurance purposes. I know insurance is cheaper on an 883 than a 1200. I'm a college student so money is tight with me. I can afford payments on either one but I don't want to pay too much insurance. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!! CHITO

No. Because the vin still states it as a 883. You could turbocharge or but a v-8 in it and it would still be registered as the same.

Hey Dallas,
Have you done the conversion to your bike? If not how do you like your bike at this stage? Are you planning on doing the conversion? CHITO

Not anytime soon, but who knows? Pretty happy with the scoot the way it is. I do know I'll be keeping my bike for awhile.

I'll be doing the 1250 on mine soon but no way in hell would I call the insurance company and tell them. It's none of their business.

What ever bike I buy I am planning on keeping it for a while. I don't 2 up riding but I know that I would like to have the power in case I need it. Does any body knowhow much I would be lookingat as far as boring out the bike and converting the bike to a 1250?

That might be true...but if you bust up the bike, don't expect the insurance company to replace it with the same mods that you have done to it.

Same here. The 1250 kit from NRHS is $750 and includes new cylinders, pistons, rings, gaskets etc.

Yep but if you start phoning the insurance company everytime you add something onto your bike you just may be paying way more in insurance then the mods were worth.

Just like modding a car. I have friends that have a sports car like mine. They have spent thousands on them. Insurance says it's the same car reguardless. So what do you do? You can mod the crap out of your scoot and play lower premiums and risk it getting hit by a cell phone mom..Or wait and buy a bigger bike in a few years. Let's say you do the mods and your out a thousand bucks if it gets hammered. You would get the same bike as long as you have gap insurance then you will hafta add another grand to fix up the new bike.

Make sense?
