If your wife is short on experience the 883 is, by far, the better choice because the 1200 has enough power to get into trouble too easily.

Also, don't be fooled that the 1200 is heavier. It's not. In fact it weighs appx 4 lbs less than the 883 because more metal is taken out of the cylinders to make more room for the larger pistons.
Another thought: Alot of people "upgrade" their 883's to 1200's but I never heard of anyone converting their 1200 to an 883.
